Frugal Living and an Attempt to Grow Beetroot

Beetroot growing in the old garden in 2008

25/02/09 - Before moving house in 2008, I dug up a couple of baby beets to check, but we had to leave the crop behind, as it just wasn't ready for harvesting. However, I did save the couple I dug up in a polythene bag in cold storage. They appeared to 'chit' like seed potatoes, so I have planted them in a bucket by the back door. On 10/03/09 I sowed my first lot of beetroot seeds into a square foot wooden planter.

09/03/09 - The first tiny leaf shoot can be clearly seen but I don't know if this will develop into anything. 13/06/09 - Raised bed with glass on top to protect the beetroot, spinach beets and from hens.
13/06/09 - Beetroot Boltardy, towards the back of the square foot garden, 9 seedlings per square, there are 2 squares of beetroot. 23/06/09 - Glass removed to let plants grow. The beetroot is coming along nicely in this frame, along with some spinach beets and brassicas.
