Frugal Living and an Attempt to Grow
'Big Jim' Chilli Peppers

30/07/08 Big Jim is certainly going to grow us some peppers, I just don't know how big.

Being a huge fan of peppers of any description, I was given this plant as a present in May 2008. It's called 'Big Jim' or BJ for short, as opposed to AJ, who first introduced me to pepper growing in 2002. The Big Jim is the largest chilli pepper, known to reach 30cm in length, but of fairly mild flavour. I will be delighted if my plant produces anything near that and will probably spend more time photographing than eating, drying, stuffing or baking anything that grows from it! BJ currently resides on the a south facing windowsill and is about 12cm high in the first photograph.

04/06/08 - BJ on the windowsill
08/06/08 - BJ has sprouted another set of leaves.
13/06/08 - BJ, staked with a chopstick, is growing quite quickly and may soon need repotting again. 22/06/08 - BJ has grown taller than the chopstick and something has been eating the leaves!
09/07/08 Big Jim is getting ready to flower, so it looks like we may get peppers this summer! 23/07/08 Big Jim has erupted, cascading flowers in abundance. Peppers soon, perhaps?
12/09/08 - still waiting but there are definitely several peppers to be seen! 30/11/08 - After the housemove, sunny southfacing window brings about a second flurry of flowers!
I planteda couple of seeds that I had saved from a Big Jim pepper last year. Big Jim is still going! 07/06/09 - Two of the Big Jim seedlings now potted up and ready to grow.
16/06/09 - After making a mistake in pruning BJ last year, the plant has decied that it will keep growing and now has peppers forming. 13/07/09 - Not much progress after almost a month! Peppers are really needing more attention, I think, as are the tomatoes.
