Frugal Living - Blackcurrants & Redcurrants

09 January 2009 - I have planted 2 blackcurrant bushes in the front garden. These were purchased from an online store and arrived in pots, so were ready just to replant. They appear to be good, strong, healthy specimens. Time will tell how they settle into life in Frugaldom. I bought a further 2 blackcurrant and 2 redcurrant bushes in a local store sale.

09/01/09 - The first 2 blackcurrant bushes have now been planted next to the blackberries in the front garden, along with 12 raspberry canes. The new border dug out and, as of 16/02/09, is home to a further 2 blackcurrant bushes, 2 redcurrant bushes and 2 Tayberry bushes.
09/03/09 - Blackcurrant and redcurrant bushes are budding, no signs of life from the Tayberries yet. 21/03/09 - The blackcurrants and redcurrants are all flourishing. Even the raspberry canes are awake.
03/05/09 - The fruit bushes are making a bit more progress since getting some sunshine. 07/06/09 - The newest redcurrant & blackcurrant bushes are coming along nicely.
16/06/09 - I think we might get some fruit from the bushes in the front garden - the netting is to stop ducks eating any more of them! 24/06/09 - Blackcurrant & redcurrant bushes being investigated by two of the Silkies. These bushes will need netted next year for fruiting.
24/06/09 The berries on the older bushes are beginning to ripen. Silkies still trying to get them. 13/07/09 As I pick, I freeze, so I now have enough collected to attempt my first blackcurrant jam.
13/07/09 I don't know why Silkies love the black currants so much! Plenty netting needed here! 13/07/09 I had at least 2 little helpers whilst berrypicking today, and more for peapod picking!
