Frugal Living and an Attempt to Grow Cabbages

I've never grown cabbages before, so 2009 will be the first attempt in a fairly small, possibly cramped garden that will be depending on netting to keep the wild birds, hens and ducks off the plants. Time will tell. On 11/02/09 I planted my first cabbage seeds in a small, homemade coldframe/raised bed. In March, the coldframe had to be dismantled and moved to make way for a greenhouse. The seedlings were all tipped into a raised bed, so I won't know which are cabbages and which are cauliflowers until they grow - if they even survive being shovelled and thrown.

13/06/09 - I planted several of the seedlings in the square foot garden after germinating them in a coldframe. I also have 3 red cabbages planted - one in a square foot planter and one each in 2 large pots shared with runner beans.

23/06/09 - The raised beds: potatoes in one and I think the other has artichokes, onions, cabbages, cauliflower, snowball turnips, broccoli and carrots.
