Frugal Living - Attempting to Grow Cauliflower

19/02/09 - I've sown a row of cauliflower seeds into the little makeshift coldframe, seen below on left. Alongside this, I planted a row each of carrots and giant onions.

19/02/09 - 2 small raised beds doubling up as coldframes. The one on the left now has the cauliflower seeds, the other has spring onion, artichoke and cabbage seeds. 09/03/09 - The young cauliflower seedlings can just be seen breaking through the soil/compost mix in the homemade coldframe. This may also double up as a raised bed.
15/03/09 Cauliflowers in abundance, I've already transplanted a couple of these seedlings into the square foot garden with more to follow soon. We prefer cauliflower to cabbage here. 19/03/09 The space where the small raised beds/cold frames used to be has been filled with a recycled greenhouse, raised patio and border deck. Seedlings all got shovelled into raised beds at left.
13/06/09 -The seedlings in the square foot garden are beginning to look like cauliflowers. Thank goodness! I had mixed some of them up with cabbage plants! 23/06/09 - The results of throwing everything into the raised beds means I can't tell cabbages from cauliflowers. We'll need to wait and see what these finally produce. Either way, if they grow, that's good.
24/06/09 - First tiny cauliflower head is about the size of a penny. 13/07/09 Major excitement, the cauliflowers are growing and there are probably enough to last us until next year! This is the one in adjacent photo, but it's now about 6 or 7 times the size.
14/07/09 I gave in and picked the first cauliflower whilst digging the first new potatoes 07/08/09 A huge cauliflower harvested from the square foot garden. Definite must for next year.
