Frugal Living and an Attempt to Grow Garlic

We had major problems in our previous garden with neighbouring cats using it as a giant litter tray! We also had a serious problem with slugs & snails. Someone suggested growing garlic to help solve the problem. Then I moved house and decided to try growing garlic for harvesting. I planted a dozen cloves in a tub in November 2008 as soon as we had moved into the new house.

This is how my garlic plants started their lives. I simply split up a couple of bulbs I had in the kitchen (supermarket bought) and stuck them strainght into the soil. It was a bargain pack, as Co-op were doing a 4 for 3 special offer on garlic!

I'm not sure if it was coincidence or if cat's just don't like potatoe plants but they never went near the potatoes in the last garden when the garlic plants grew.

05/02/09 - these are a result of the cloves that were planted outside in the tub in mid-November 2008. They need the cold to prepare them for growth. 19/02/09 - 11 out of the 12 cloves have sprouted, so far. I hope they continue to grow as this amount would last me a full year without buying any.

14/05/09 - 11 of the 12 garlic cloves are still surviving, I just hope they are developing into useable garlic bulbs!
