29/03/09 - Clocks went forward and we woke to the first day of British summertime and found the garden white with frost and all the water dishes frozen solid. The winds howled overhead and the sun shone, so it was onward and upwards, and the first day of freedom for the hens. On 31/03/09 we practically had a heatwave and were out in the garden all day.

29/03/09 - Mrs Black's broody house has been moved into the hen run as an extra shelter. 29/03/09 - Mrs Grey now has her broody house and the small 6' x 3' run will be handy for chicks.
29/03/09 - The door is open but the trio would rather eat a piece of banana than investigate the garden. 29/03/09 - Mr White surveys the perimeter of the run before deciding who goes outside first.
29/03/09 - They eventually come out their run but prefer to investigate the duck run first. 29/03/09 - Next up, they go and investigate the new runs that are being built.
29/03/09 - back in their run and Mrs Brown decides to try some orange. 31/03/09 - Mr White struts off in a huff after being caught in the back porch looking for food!
31/03/09 - The trio investigate the rest of the garden, making the most of the warm sunshine. 31/03/09 - Not content to go in the back door to the porch, Mr White proceeds to try the front door!
01/04/09 - The day old chicks are now a week old. This is 'first born'. 01/04/09 - Stripes is feathering up the quickest, with near full wings already.
01/04/09 - 2 of the 3 amigos have dark flecks on a few of their white feathers. 01/04/09 - Mrs Black's solitary bantam chick has just started to get tiny wing feathers.

05/04/09 - Late yesterday I heard peeping from Mrs Grey's nest box. Today, this is what I saw.

05/04/09 - Hens snoozing in the spring sunshine after scratching about in the garden for hours.
05/04/09 - The new chick run has 13mm mesh all the way round. Mrs Grey's broody house no longer needs the small 6' x 3' run with all this space. 06/04/09 - BIG SURPRISE! Mrs Grey now has 3 chicks with her and is still sitting on the other 6 eggs.
07/04/09 - Overnight, another 3 chicks have hatched out under Mrs Grey, so we have a final total of 6 chicks. 08/04/09 - Laid by Mrs Black in the small hen house, our very first frugal free range egg, a lovely cream colour as opposed to brown..
08/04/09 - Mrs Grey brings her babies out into the nursery run for a peck and scratch. 08/04/09 - First born with the white wings was too fast to be caught in a family photo session.
08/04/09 - The happy little family enjoy a brief spell foraging outside. This picture just captures all 6 chicks with mum, Mrs Grey. 08/04/09 - 5 of the 8 older chicks, feathering up and learning to roost. That's 'Stripey' on the right and the greys are the lavender Araucanas. Captain Beaky in the middle is still the biggest.
