Frugal Living - Growing our own Peas

I only decided to try growing some peas late in May 2008, when I spotted the packs of seeds whilst collecting some grow bags from a local garden centre. I planted a handful into trays and left them in the plastic greenhouse, then transplanted them to the wooden pots that had been placed along the wall of the back yard. I lined the wall with polythene and then overlaid netting in an effort to reduce the slug attacks but it was not a complete success. 2009 and I'm trying again in the new garden. This time, I have peas in every conceivable corner of the garden - I like peas!

First box all but demolished!
Now reached about 10cm (04/06/08)
22/06/08 - Some of the plants are doing exceptionally well, others have been stripped bare! 09/07/08 - Despite all odds, there are a few of the plants managing to hang on in there. And look!
23/07/08 - Against all odds, the pea pods are surviving the constant snaol attacks 23/07/08 - The first few pods have been picked (and eaten) and plenty more still growing.
08/03/09 - New house, new garden, new beginning, these are a handful of peas and beans I have soaking on cottonwool indoors before planting out. 09/03/09 - I also planted a handful of peas into a pot outside on 11/02/09. These were covered with polythene for protection - now sprouting.
15/03/09 The pre-sprouted peas were planted out a couple of days ago and have begun to grow. Hoping for a better crop this year. 21/03/09 - 2 x trellis fpr peas & beans in foreground, 1 just visible between those and the tomato house, wooden planters in background.
21/03/09 - As per last year's growing, I have also got peas in the strawberry planters and at the back of the other veg seeds in these. 05/04/09 - The first pot of peas is growing well and, so far, nothing has attempted to eat them!
05/04/09 - The peas transferred from the tray of cotton wool are now well through the soil. 25/04/09 - A bit of sunshine and the peas are now beginning to look for something to climb.
22/05/09 - The peas and beans are growing fairly well so far. 22/05/09 - The peas along the edge of the square foot garden are growing quickly.
22/05/09 - The first flowers are beginning to appear, so let's hope the winds calm down soon to avoid any further losses or breakages. 07/06/09 - The peas in the wooden planters have suddenly shot up and have started to flower.
07/06/09 - The first pods are appearing on the earliest planted peas. 13/06/09 - Peas in a tub within a mesh 'wigwam'
15/06/09 The sugarsnap peas are about 10cm high in left planter and new seeds planted in right. 16/06/09 - The first planted seeds have grown, flowered and are now getting pods.
23/06/09 - Next lot of plants are developing lovely long pods. And still, I am planting more peas. If they survive to picking, I'll have enough for a year. 23/06/09 - I planted another 24 sugarsnap peas into 2 tubs on the greenhouse patio and built them a frame (bottom right of picture).
03/07/09 The first crop of peas. I use the pods for making vegetable stock but have so many peas that I'm having to freeze bags of pods to save wasting them. 13/07/09 Peas seem to love it here! I'm picking pods almost every day and can't eat them as fast as they are growing! That's last night's 'just passing' pickings.
13/07/09 That's a 500ml tub of shelled peas ready for blanching & freezing. Others not shelled yet. 13/07/09 Freshly shelled this morning, the pods make fantastic soup stock but I've now learned they can also make excellent wine!

14/07/09 A few more peas picked in the passing whilst getting first cauliflower and new potatoes
