Frugal Living and an Attempt to Grow Rhubarb

2009 and we have moved house, so have to start the garden again. On 03/01/09, I sowed some rhubarb seeds into a tray and wrapped it in bubble wrap. This got overturned when we lost the greenhouse to the storms. I also planted 2 crowns of rhubarb dug up from a friend's garden. Within a few weeks, the crowns have awoken and started unfurling tiny wrinkled leaves

24/01/09 - First crown has begun to grow 04/02/09 - The frost and snow haven't deterred it
09/03/09 - Crown two bursts into life, overtaking the first one. 09/03/09 - Rhubarb seeds beginning to grow despite having been tipped over during a storm!
14/03/09 The Rhubarb crowns are settling in really well to their corner of Frugaldom garden. 14/03/09 Slowly but surely, the tiny rhubarb seedlings are struggling onwards and upwards.
The rhubarb is growing really well and I'll be sorely tempted to harvest some this year. 05/04/09 - Fortunately, the hens don't seem to touch the poisonous rhubarb leaves, but they dig.

10/04/09 - I took the plunge andcut the first few stalks of rhubarb then netted off the rest to save it from the hens. Well, most of the hens!! Yes, this one has gone INSIDE the netting!

12/04/09 - The rhubarb seedlings are thriving in the greenhouse. I think I'll need to prepare a proper, fenced-in rhubarb corner in the garden as we need plenty of it but need to keep the hens off it.
May 2009 - Enough rhubarb to make a few crumbles, I'll count this as a success. 27/02/10 This is last year's seedlings beginning to grow through. 3 crowns seem to be growing.
