Frugal Living and Square Foot Gardening

Square Foot Gardening
See the LINKS page for a brilliant free tool to help design your square foot garden.

Square foot gardening is something I have been researching with interest. The whole concept is like having a revolving budget with your currency being fruit, veg & herbs with some flowers as spare change. Most of my reading material online has suggested or recommended using minimum 3 x 3 or 3 x 4 plots, giving you 9 or 12 squares in which to grow different vegetables, fruits or herbs. For my first attempt at this, I have made a raised bed measuring approximately 8' by 4.5' The extra 3" down either side will be planted up with marigolds and herbs in an effort to distract insects from the vegetables. It is only about 6" deep and has a water permeable liner over the top of the grass rather than digging up the lawn. It will need fenced in for protection from the cat, pheasant & hens.

12/03/09 The new plot is almost ready for marking out the squares. It isn't deep enough for potatoes, carrots or parsnips, so they are all in containers. 14/03/09 The raised bed is now ready for square foot gardening. I have 32 squares for veg and 16 strips, each measuring 12" x 3" for flowers & herbs

15/03/09 - This is to represent my grid on the square foot garden. Because of the extra 6", I have spare 'slots' down either side. These are foing to be planted with flowers and herbs. Numbers 01 and 02 have just been planted with chives and I have also planted the following:
01 - 9 x onions
02 - 16 x leeks
03 - 1 x brocolli
04 - 16 x radishes
05 - 1 x cauliflower
06 - 1 x brocolli
07 - 4 x lettuce
08 - 16 x beetroot boltardy
With the eight extra 3" slots on the left hand side, I have planted peas, which will be interspersed with marigolds. On the opposite side, I'm planning chives, parsley, marigolds and nasturtiums.

09 - Brussels Sprouts
10 - Beetroot Boltardy
11 - Swede
12 - Snowball Turnips
13 & 17 - Courgette
14 - Brocolli
15 - Beetroot Boltardy
16 - Broccoli
18 - Spinach Beets
19 - Broccoli
20 - Springh Onions
21 & 25 - Courgette
22 - Beetroot Boltardy
23 - Spinach Beets
24 - Cabbage
26 - Cabbage
27 - Broccoli
28 - Snowball Turnip
29 - Cauliflower
30 - Snowball Turnip
31 - Cauliflower
32 - Radishes
31/03/09 - The lettuce and cauliflower are doing well, the radishes have come through and I've planted the furthest edge with peas. It's also been surrounded with wire mesh to keep the hens, cats, pheasants, hedgehogs & anything else out. 05/04/09 - The first of the planted squares are starting to show some life. I can already see the onions, leeks, broccoli, radishes, cauliflower, lettuces, which were transplanted from the containers, and beetroot.
I spy a blue tit inside my square foot garden! It isn't alone, I might add. And there goes another greenfinch! I think the netting will be going over the top soon.
25/04/09 - I can already see onions, leeks, broccoli, radishes, cauliflower, lettuce, cabbage, snowball turnip and peas.

25/04/09 - I have 3 varieties of lettuce and the entire left hand side of narrow boxes is filled with peas. These have all germinated and can just be seen.

25/04/09 - The hens love scratching about under the willow, blackberry & blackcurrant bushes behind the square foot garden. 22/05/09 - I've already started picking leaves from the lettuce and have used some of the radishes, almost everything going to plan so far.
22/05/09 - 1 Courgette was blown away in the gales, so I may 'plastic wrap' my SFG for added protection from the winds. 13/06/09 - The lettuces are cropping well, we can get leaves from them every couple of days. Peas are now beginning to flower and radishes ready.
13/07/09 What a difference a month makes! It's time to start replacing more squares already! The peas are coming along nicely, too. 13/07/09 This is square number 29. The snowball turnips have bolted, lettuce, spinach beets and peas being picked now.
28/01/10 We've now got 4 x railway sleepers as edging for this year's SFG. Rather than 32 squares, I'll have 56 this year, with 28 each side of a small path, but still fenced in from the hens & ducks. 28/01/10 The Silkies were first in there to scrape and scratch, shortly follwed by the rest of the hens and the ducks. I reckon they'll have it weeded and turned over by nightfall
29/01/10 The sleepers are now in place, they just need extra securing before we start filling it. Chickens still insisting on helping! 13/02/10 The new SFG, complete with path, will allow 24 squares either side of the path and a row of peas & beans at the back. Still frozen for now.

20/03/10 The smaller raised bed has been split into 2 large squares measuring 2' x 2'. One side has onions, the other will have leeks.
