Frugal Living - Saga of the Silkies

Our first Silkie chick, hatched 04/03/09
Handy Books

After the saga of the last Silkie eggs, I decided to try again, this time with a dozen eggs. On 26th March 2009, a further 12 mixed Silkie bantam eggs were put into one of the incubators, along with 6 splash Pekin bantam eggs. These are due to hatch on Thursday 16th April, all going well.

31/03/09 - Day 6 in the incubator, the 6 eggs on left hand side are Pekin bantams, the others are from an assortment of Silkie bantams. 05/04/09 - Silkie chick loves going outside into the little run where s/he scratches around and copies the big hens.
05/04/09 - Silkie chick is now a month old and we still cannot decide what colour it is. The crest is now coming in red 05/04/09 - Looking windswept and interesting with a little red mohican hair style. This is one funny looking chick, possibly partridge x red colour.
17/04/09 - Silkie chick is now 6 weeks old and it's the first big adventure free ranging in the garden with the others, except they got ignored. 17/04/09 - Silkie chick blending in the with wood chips - good camouflage! I think it's spying on the others!
17/04/09 - I don't do digging in dirt and I don't do scratching in the garden, I prefer clean paths! And I certainty don't eat worms! Commoners! 17/04/09 - We have 5 more Silkie chicks among this lot. I think there are 2 blues, a white, a cuckoo and a partridge. The others are Pekins
23/04/09 - One week old Silkie chicks. These are what I think will be blue (they turned white) 23/04/09 - One week old Silkie chicks. These are what I think will be white (they stayed white)
23/04/09 - One week old Silkie chicks. This little chappie is partridge. This is the original Silkie chick - it has more red and no black on it at all, so it isn't partridge.
25/04/09 - Our first Silkie chick is now almost 8 weeks old. It was about to sit down here. 30/04/09 - Silkiechick now gets to free range on good days and has discovered Docken leaves!
02/05/09 - I suspect that all 4 of the light coloured Silkie chicks may be white, albeit dirty white today! 02/05/09 -There are no signs of blue in the feathers, they're all growing in white.
08/05/09 - Our lonesome Silkie chick finds a new friend at last! She looks a bit shocked to find out she's a Silkie, though! 15/05/09 - Silkiechick and Fluffyfriend now get out to wander about as they please but tend to hang about the shed during inclement weather
22/05/09 - The Silkie chicks are now big enough to go outside when it's dry. 04/06/09 - Silkiechick continues to grow and is now getting much braver.
04/06/09 - The babies have now been allowed out for short spells. One has already gone to its new home. 04/06/09 - Del Boy, on the right, keeps an eye on the others out in the garden. They are 7 weeks old today.
07/06/09 - Introducing the Silkies to one another. 22/06/09 Silkie and Fluffy still stick together
22/06/09 Hopefully, this lovely little bearded chappie has been selected to stay as the resident Silkie cockeral (assuming it's a cockeral). 22/06/09 Bearded chicks left and back, non-bearded on right. The one on the right will be going soon as I haven't the space for them all.
22/06/09 Partridge chick at the back has been named 'Del Boy' by neighbours who want to keep him, (although it could be a her). September 2009 - Our home hatched Silkie cockerel freeranging in the garden. He's a bit of a cocky cockerel!
