Frugal Living - an Attempt to Grow Butternut Squash

Cucurbita Moschata

I'd never have thought of attempting to grow butternut squash in my garden had it not been for the fact that the BBC Big Dig provided me with some free seeds. The little packet contained 6 seeds, so I duly planted them. All 6 germinated, so I have planted them in various places both inside and outside the greenhouse. It's very much an experiment as high winds here aren't recommended for growing anything vertically, but that's the only way I have space for them, so that's the way they are going.

BBC freebie seeds all germinated, so now we are trying to grown butternut squash. 22/06/09 This butternut squash is inside the greenhouse, planted in a kitchen washing basin

03/07/09 - The squash in the greenhouse is growing really well now. Outdoor ones still OK, too.

13/07/09 Growing REALLY fast now and sending out tendrils all ways. There are also some flowers near the base.
