TWIT LIT

Have you spent years of your life wishing you could write, wanting to write, writing it and then finding out that nobody else wants to read it? Rejection letters piling up and never even a hint of a publishing contract? Well with all these chick fliks, chick lit and star studded big hits, we decided it was time to launch TWIT LIT - it will be the next big literary hit! We have Shona Prophett at the helm steering us towards what we hope will be our first TWIT LIT publication...

The biggest events in recent publishing history must surely be the emergence of PRINT ON DEMAND (POD) and the increasing interest in ELECTRONIC BOOKS, or eBook publishing. Many mainstream publishing houses are at a complete loss as to whether or not they should pursue electronic publishing to any great degree, with the big question being, 'Are ebooks here to stay?' Here at NYK Media in Wigtown, Scotland's national book town, we believe they are!

No matter how many people state their preference for a good old-fashioned printed book with which to relax and read, there will always be an incoming tide of 'tech-types' hungry for anything digital. Publishing must cater for ALL levels and types of readership. That is why NYK Media is focussing on the quality and readability of material as well as the financial viability of selected titles. If you have a story to tell or would like to have your work considered for publishing, we are accepting submissions now. To submit work, please email our submissions department with your details and brief synopsis contained within your email. Should we decide to consider your work, we will request it; unsolicited email attachments will not be read.

NYK Media made its first tentative venture into electronic publishing in September 2004, with the launch of 'Now You Know' magazine in Adobe .pdf ebook format.

Readership figures, comparing both versions of the same publication, have far exceeded our expectations in the electronic version of NYK. We believe the reasons for this include convenience and worldwide access, seeing as a very high percentage of the ebook copies are being downloaded overseas. Readers from around the globe are interested in Scotland and our Scottish writers, but it was with some surprise that we witnessed multiple downloads from as far afield as Thailand and Singapore!

A note to prospective new writers

You are welcome to join our online writers' group at www.ScottishWriters.co.uk

A note to unpublished writers

Whilst you may have toiled blood, sweat and tears to complete what you perceive as a best seller, without an actual book you have nothing to sell. Even if you did, WHY should the reading public choose to spend their hard-earned cash on what you have written?

We recommend that any potential writers considering writing any form of book should familiarise themselves with current market trends and fully analyse the commercial viability of their subject. The financial success of any publication depends on sales and sales will, on the whole, be affected by the amount of marketing and advertising your title receives.

A cautionary note to published writers

Always check publishing contracts thoroughly to ensure that you have not inadvertently signed away you electronic publishing rights along with standard hardback and/or paperback rights. Every individual format warrants individual attention - Hardback, paperback, electronic - online version, ebook, CD etc. Also, always differentiate between First British rights, European rights, Worldwide rights, language translations, merchandise rights, electronic games, film, television, radio broadcasting... Know your rights - ALL OF THEM! (ALWAYS READ THE SMALL PRINT.)
