MY HORSE RACING TALES
THIS IS ROSIE, AKA 'FIRST RHAPSODY' UPDATE OCT 2007 - What a really bad horse! 7 races and the best she has managed this year was 6th out of 17 at Carlisle in early June. She just isn't fast enough, so I'd think she needs a further distance to see if stamina can come into play. But who am I to say such things when she's been been dropped back to 7 furlongs again for her entry at Kempton on (Wednesday) the 31st? Can'd be sure she'll get a run, though. Readers of 'Now You Know' magazine will already be aware of my dalliances into the unpredictable world of horseracing. I can't help it, I enjoy the thrill of it all! The past couple of years racing have been scant, as I have had to concentrate on other things. However, I gave mention of one little colt by the name of Amadeus Wolf in 2005 and was fortunate enough to attend Ayr on his debut outing. By then, of course, word was out and he was sent off favourite, winning his maiden. His first five races clocked him up three firsts, a second and a third, his prime win being at Newmarket in a £98,000 Group One race. Not bad for us 'Wolfie' fans. He ran again as a 3y-o, but never quite managed to find that final turn of foot needed to win, despite bringing his winnings up to £332,206. I'll probably place a lucky penny on him each way, should he reappear during the 2007 Flat season. More recently, my attention turned to the previously unknown ''Phoenix Tower'. The colt had his one and only modest little race as a 2 y-o last year at Wolverhampton, where I successfully backed him. I eagerly await his reappearance this year. What makes me select such animals, you may ask? One thing - female lunacy; I like their names! That's why I'm awaiting the first serious trial of a son of Hawk Wing named 'Phoenix Flight'. I really liked Hawk Wing and was fortunate enough to be at Newmarket for the 2000 Guineas with my money ready to back the favourite. That was, until I saw Johnny Murtagh looking like he'd sweated off every extra milligram of weight. THAT, and only that, was what made me switch tack and back Rock of Gibralter that day. 2002 was a good year. I haven't been forgiven for predicting the 1-2-3 in that year's 1000 Guineas and NOT getting the bet on. That prediction was made entirely on my so-called ridiculous 'shoe' theory. But enough of past glories and near misses - betting on horses is a mug's game. That's why I decided to forfeit the timewasting of racing-people watching and settle, instead, for shares in a racehorse. Her name is Rosie, and she's now five years old and back in training, preparing for this year's Flat Season. She's a pretty little horse and, win - lose - or draw,- I'll be following her every footstep along the lower ranks of the racing circuit.
