In 2006, Wigtown entered the Scotland in Bloom competition for the first time. The entry generated much popular enthusiasm, particularly when it was discovered that our community had gone through to the latter stages of the judging process. It was soon clear that sufficient momentum could be established to warrant another entry for 2007. During the winter a group of hardy individuals had been out planting bulbs and conversations with various householders indicated that they were already planning their planters and window boxes for summer. Consequently, a public meeting was convened by the Community Council to assess the level of support for

Wigtown's entry in Beautiful Scotland 2007

Since then, we have had several meetings to progress our entry. Individuals and local businesses have offered financial support and the Community Council provided an initial amount of funding. In addition, Dumfries and Galloway Parks Department have been actively involved and support has come from Dumfries and Galloway Housing Partnership. The local Youth Group were also successful with a bid application to upgrade the community garden at Seaview. During the year, the Primary schoolchildren have also diligently tended their own garden and the fruit and flowers now in evidence bear witness to their efforts. Communal flower displays have been provided, a watering rota organised and litter picks carried out in an effort to enhance the town’s appearance. One of the most heartening aspects has been the very positive response from individual householders.

The profusion of planters, hanging baskets and window displays has brightened the environment, making it so much more attractive for visitors and townspeople alike. (Jim McColm, Convener, Royal Burgh of Wigtown & District Community Council.)

WIGTOWN IN BLOOM

Our entry into Beautiful Scotland 2007 has seen the arrival of a further eight hanging baskets, which have been displayed around the public gardens and bowling green between North and South Main Streets. The baskets, a colourful array of Fuchsias, were each sponsored by local traders from around the town.

A regular watering schedule has been implemented by local residents to ensure that hanging baskets and floral displays throughout the town are maintained during the dry spells. This is further complimented by the regular weeding and litter picking expeditions

Numerous projects have been completed, are under way, and have been proposed for future development. These include:
