Birdwatching in/around WIGTOWN BAY
26th April 2007 - A second male bird arrives at the nest site but it STILL isn't the original partner of this female. The new male is an unrung bird. Sunday 15th April 2007 - Just spotted the first Swallows swooping over the bay Saturday 14th April 2007 - A second Osprey (younger male) arrives but is not the original mate of the hen who is already at the nest site! He was later identified as' EP', having been rung at RSPB Abernethy Forest Reserve on 17th July 2003 Has our hen found a toy boy? Can't blame a bird for trying! Wednesday 4th April 2007 - Hen Osprey arrives back safely at the nest site! Wigtown Bay is the largest Local Nature Reserve in Britain and a popular winter destination for many species of migratory birds. You can also observe the local Ospreys from the comfort of the County Buildings with the luxury of live camera footage from the nest site. (Photographs from 2006) CCTV is linked from the bird hide to the County Buildings camera room, where you can observe the birds' movements in comfort. From this same camera room you can watch live footage of the area's nesting Ospreys when they are resident. Along the wooden walkway at the far end of Wigtown Harbour you will find a substantial bird hide. From here, you have clear views across the wetlands in all directions. Visitors should observe tide times, copies of which are normally posted within the bird hide and at Machars Action in South Main Street. High tide does flood the carpark and walkway, so be cautious of where you leave your vehicle if visiting. Wigtown harbour is also the setting for the fishing competition, car boot sale, vintage car rally point and finishing line to the annual raft race. See photogallery for more pictures.
