The Internet in Rhyme

(c) Susan King 1998

What did you do last week, they say?

I sat alone at my desk all day.

And what did you do at your desk all day?

I was on the Internet, putting words on display.

And what, exactly, is the Internet'?

It's where you chat to friends that you've never met.

And you call them friends with only words to see?

Of course I do, they are friends to me.

About what do you chat to these unseen friends?

We discuss work and weather and long weekends.

And how do you know these friends are true?

Because I have a little more faith than you!

But what if they one day track you down?

Then we'll meet for tea in the middle of town.

So, you work online to secure a deal?

Yes, my virtual life is just as real.

And you reckon one day it'll pay a wage?

Of course it will, it's the computer age.

How do you expect to make this pay?

By working most nights and every day.

So, explain to me, are these friends alright?

They are just like ships that pass in the night.

Can you explain about the writing to me?

It's a method of expression that sets you free.

These passing friends, they all write too?

Maybe this will explain it to you...

Stop your questions and listen this time,

I'll explain with the dialogue all in rhyme.

On the Internet, the world communicates,

And I suppose that's thanks to Mister Gates.

One man had a vision, which few have denied,

World domination, he may even have tried,

But I prefer not to think of it that way,

Instead, the world could be at one some day.

In the written word, if the truth be told,

The weakest person can become so bold.

Our ability to reach out across the land,

Has given us the chance to understand,

That hopes and dreams can all come true,

If only we all knew what to do.

A universal language is within our reach,

And to all the world, this we must teach.

United we stand, divided we perish,

This modern miracle, we must cherish.

On the World Wide Web, you can meet all kinds,

And all of a sudden, there's a meeting of minds.

Communication is the key to better life,

One without famine, violence or strife,

Our global community is drawing near,

And then the truth, we all shall hear,

That the chosen few have, for far too long,

Twisted the facts, changed the words to the song.

The global conspiracy to control the nations,

Will be overturned amidst celebrations,

When all these thinkers' minds have met,

We will all be thanking the Internet,

For thoughts will then be written down,

Sent from person to person and town to town,

And before you know it, in some funny old way,

The truth is revealed and will be here to stay.

So when you ask, what's so great about writing?

There is nothing in life that is more exciting,

Being able to express your innermost fears,

That so many repress throughout their years,

Is really and truly the work of the wise,

And this we must surely recognise.

No matter the topic, the mood or the tone,

With the gift of writing, you are never alone.
