Affordable, frugal caravan holidays in Scotland

Balminnoch offers an ideal getaway location for those seeking natural inspiration, country pursuits or relaxation so this is an excellent opportunity for writers, artists, outdoor fitness fans or even those who simply want to try rural living without being too far off the beaten track. (Nearest bus route is about 7 miles from the holiday park.)

We hope our Frugaldom project will become a source of inspiration for fellow writers, artists, crafters, photographers and, of course, followers of our frugal living and self sustainability challenges.

While work progresses, volunteer workers can make the most of their free time enjoying all the facilities the holiday park has to offer, while recharging, relaxing and unwinding.

We have a 2-bedroom and a 3-bedroom caravan available, each fully equipped with all you need for a break in the country. There are even a few little luxury extras available, such as :

  • WiFi
  • TV
  • DVD player
  • Indoor heated swimming pool
  • 9-hole pitch and putt golf course
  • Fishing lochs
  • Nature walks
  • Squirrel hide
  • Wet weather family games (cards, board games, dominoes etc.)
  • Selection of books, magazines and films

We enjoy an elevated position with views of Loch Heron and the surrounding countryside. There is easy access parking by the caravans and the Frugaldom project, itself, is only about 1km from the site. The Galloway Forest Park, just a few miles away, has dark sky status, reflecting how often we witness spectacular starry skies. We can't guarantee sunshine or shooting stars, but we can guarantee the frugaldom experience.

Caravans have full length wooden deckings

Caravans are accessed by steps leading up onto wooden decking, which provides adequate outdoor seating space during fine weather, or for star-gazing. Our location is adjacent to a small woodland where we have bird feeding stations. Jays, nut hatches, tree creepers and woodpeckers are among the regular visitors.

Caravan kitchen

Kitchens are fully equipped with gas cooker, microwave, toaster, fridge freezer and electric kettle plus the usual cutlery, crockery, pots, pans and cooking utensils.

Living room and dining area in the 2-bedroom caravan

The main living and dining areas are spacious, light and comfortable with adequate seating for friends and family. The caravan shown here has 1 double bedroom, one twin room and a single room with space for a cot. In addition, there is a foldaway double bed in the living area, which allows the caravan to sleep up to 8, ideal if you are bringing family and/or friends. The 2-bedroom caravan offers a well proportioned double bedroom with en suite, a spacious twin room, plus the benefit of an extra foldaway double bed in the living area, allowing for a maximum of 6.

You may like to bring walking boots, wellie boots, swimming suits, fishing rods and/or golf clubs. If you are seeking artistic or creative inspiration, bring some art & crafts supplies. Writers, bring your notebooks or laptops. We even have Wi-Fi for those of you who want to keep in contact online while enjoying your break.

Views from the caravan

The photographers among you may be able to catch a shot of the resident woodpeckers an you can visit the site's hide to watch for red squirrels. The area has an abundance of wildlife and a good population of owls. If you are lucky, you may spot a red kite or even a white tailed sea eagle soaring overhead.
